Spiritual athleticism
The call to endurance
The
Providence of God plots a course specially designed for your race. Do not fail
to recognize the markers along the way so that you find satisfaction in your
running and remain headed in the right direction. Have faith that all your
senses benefit from the exercise and receive strength from them.
Your
race is a marathon, not a sprint, and because of the intensity, you might have
setbacks and feel discouraged about your performance or suffer from loneliness
during long stretches. But God is faithful, and his Spirit is in you to have
the fortitude to not give in to the temptation to give up. The route has rough
terrain and unexpected obstacles. If, when encountering them, you suffer
injury, the Lord will bandage you up and carry you to recovery. Others who have
already run their race will be cheering you on and encouraging you to keep
going no matter what.
You
must have a sense of urgency and purpose to make it to the end. Focusing on the
prize, the upward calling of God in Christ Jesus will get you there, but you
will need to stop and take a rest to reenergize, giving thanks to God for the
challenge and its rewards. Rely on his grace for your sustenance, and remember
to stay hydrated.

Are our
lives determined by fate or chance? Did God create the universe and then step
aside to watch history unfold from a distance? In this message, Alistair Begg challenges us to consider
that according to the Bible, the details of our lives actually unfold within
the providence of God. He is working in every circumstance – good and bad – for
His glory. The Christian can take comfort in the knowledge that all of our days
unfold in the care of our loving Father.
